Scholastic Corporation

Scholastic Corporation is the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books and a leader in children’s educational media and technology. Scholastic has over $2 billion in revenues, more than 9,500 employees and is a global leader in children’s brands and distribution, creating children's books, magazines, technology-based products, teacher materials, television programming, feature film, videos and toys. Scholastic distributes its products and services worldwide through a variety of channels, including school-based book clubs, school-based book fairs, retail stores, schools, libraries, television networks and its web site.

Challenge

Scholastic Corporation had been constantly fine-tuning its abilities to stay competitive, yet bring new educational technologies, services and children’s media to both school and home. Through its consistent growth year after year, the balance between investment and getting a better handle on rapid inventory turns had proven to be difficult. Schools all over the globe hosting Scholastic’s book fairs presented a complex inventory challenge that required a new picking process. Looking to sidestep traditional picking solutions to meet the demands of the growth, Scholastic selected Wynright for its light-directed picking technology.

Approach

With a long history of providing picking solutions for many different industries, Wynright understood the demands of the environment. The primary need was a system that allowed flexibility in both rollout and implementation. A traditional pick-to-light solution requires fixed warehouse real estate and typically can only handle one or two operations. Scholastic needed the flexibility to build outbound sales cases per requirements, handle returns, and then recycle the cases back into the book fair market without titles ever needing to be returned to stock. Wynright’s innovative Visual Light software and hardware solution provides a quick turn, low-cost alternative that uses visual guides and touch screen interface, all in one computer. This solution meant that Scholastic had the ability to be portable in three distinct processes: case build, box build and sortation.

Outcome

Today Scholastic has gained the needed oversight to their inventory and work loading operations. The Visual Light solution, with visual guides, has improved accuracy and increased productivity by 15%, even with the use of seasonal labor. Visual Light also created inventory visibility, reporting and accountability that had been elusive to Scholastic.   With the implementation of the new Visual Light system, Scholastic can now track 100% of their outbound case builds.  Prior to the system, outbound case builds were only partially tracked.
